“Beginner’s Luck” takes a wide-angle view of early adulthood—an apt subject for a super-talented quintet of artists in their twenties. The music ranges through art song (Grieg and Fauré) to theater song (Gershwin and Jason Robert Brown) as it explores first loves, the thrill of leaving home, the early steps of a career in the arts, and the dizzying promise (and peril) of everything that life can bring. The concert brings back to the East Coast two singers who did beautiful work in past NYFOS@Juilliard shows (Reed Gnepper and Chea Kang), a mezzo-soprano who captivated audiences this year at Juilliard (Kate Morton), a charismatic Russian baritone currently studying in Montreal (Jamal Al-Titi), and a brilliant young pianist new to our series (Zoey Zhou). And, of course the show is masterminded by pianists Bénédicte Jourdois and Steve Blier, back to make trouble as only they can.
