Reunion: Theo Hoffman & Steven Blier

This year’s concert at Poquatuck Hall will bring baritone Theo Hoffman back to Orient, NY for a program of songs by Gershwin, Guastavino, Bernstein, the Beatles, and Sondheim. Hoffman’s recent album on NYFOS Records, Schubert/Beatles, was nominated for a Grammy; his opera and concert appearances have garnered rave reviews around the world. This concert celebrates the 14th anniversary of his collaboration with Steven Blier, one of his early mentors and now a cherished colleague. Tickets ($25) via Eventbrite.

Mainstage — FIRST-NAME BASIS

From Beethoven’s “Adelaide” to Fauré’s “Lydia” to Noël Coward’s “Nina,”  our playlist is composed of songs whose titles are the given names of a colorful cast of characters, ranging from Biblical times (Belsazar) and Greek myths (Ganymede)  to the Beatles’ London (Michelle) and Randy Newman’s America (Marie). Featuring soprano Christine Taylor Price, mezzo-soprano Megan Moore, baritone Samuel Kidd, and NYFOS’s own Steven Blier and Bénédicte Jourdois as pianists and hosts.

A Goyishe Christmas to You!

Our annual holiday traditional, now in its 17th year! The program consists of Yuletide songs written by Jewish composers, from the wickedly funny to the meltingly beautiful. Featuring soprano Lauren Worsham, mezzo-sopranos Donna Breitzer and Rebecca Jo Loeb, tenor Alex Mansoori, baritone Joshua Jeremiah, and Cantor Joshua Breitzer. Steven Blier joins as pianist and host, alongside clarinetist Alan R. Kay.

THE PETER J SHARP THEATER AT THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL 
HURRAY FOR HOLLYWOOD!

A celebration of the glamour of songs from the silver screen, featuring music by Stephen Sondheim, The Beatles, Burt Bacharach, “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca, and more, performed by students from the Marcus Institute of Vocal Arts, after a residency with NYFOS’s own Steven Blier and staging director Katherine M. Carter. This program will be streamed live on the Juilliard website free of charge, but will not be available to view afterwards.

Tickets will be available from The Juilliard School box Office later this fall.

Mainstage — UNITED WE STAND

A new program exploring the universal values that unite us all, through music by Joni Mitchell, Carlos López Buchardo, Fairuz, Franz Schubert, and others. Their songs take a stand against cruelty and intolerance, singing of kindness, connection, love, and the beauty of a day well lived. NYFOS favorites Theo Hoffman and Shelén Hughes Camacho head an international cast for a United Nations of Song, a hymn to ethics, and a call to action. With pianists Steven Blier and Bénédicte Jourdois.

Mainstage — GUILTY PLEASURES

A program of secrets, admonitions, parables, guilt, and delights from many cultures and centuries. This bracing dive into the Seven Deadly Sins (with a side tour to some sweeter peccadillos) includes songs by Strauss, Britten, John Jacob Niles, Brahms, and Irving Berlin, sung by Caramoor’s 2027 Schwab Vocal Rising Stars–a quartet of singers and one pianist. These expert young balladeers offer a concert of special power and unguilty pleasure, after a week of residency and mentorship by Steven Blier and Bénédicte Jourdois

Mainstage — HARLEM RENAISSANCE

The songs of “Fats” Waller, Florence Price, Duke Ellington, Eubie Blake, J. Rosamund Johnson, and William Grant Still join the writings of Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston, evoking the creative power of Black America that surged a hundred years ago. Two powerhouse singers, Lucia Bradford and Justin Austin, along with pianists Bénédicte Jourdois and Steven Blier, are on board to raise the roof with tunes like “The Joint Is Jumpin’” and “What Harlem Means to Me.”
