Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians play “Auld Lang Syne”

Song of the Day is off for the holidays, but we are re-posting a week of holiday songs from NYFOS Managing Director Charles McKay. This post first ran on December 23, 2016.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I had to close my second week with “Auld Lang Syne” as only Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians could do it, with  on vocals.  Talk about nostalgic—the memories come flooding back!  I dedicate this one to my six siblings, Sandra, Jim, Bob, Steve, Bryan and Sharon, all still very much with us.  xoxo Chuck

No better way for getting in the mood for the holidays!  This recording takes me back to my earliest memories.  It was made in 1946 but it was still very much played in the McKay household at Christmas time in the mid to late 50’s and through the 60’s.  As much as I love the Andrew sisters and their incredible harmony, it’s the instrumental segment that really gets me.  Lombardo and his orchestra had such a unique sound, one that completely filled my childhood for years and one that I will never forget.

And as bonus, another Lombardo tune, “The Christmas Waltz.”  This one I dedicate to my folks, who this year would have turned 99 (mom) and 98 (dad).  They enjoyed music, esp Lombardo, and when this tune played on the old hi fi, it was the rare time they would dance together doing their version of the box step.

I hope you enjoy these and seek out more of Lombardo’s recordings!
