Following yesterday’s post about Gabriela Frank and Anne Ronell, I started thinking about Clarice Assad. She is a wonderful pianist, composer and vocalist. If you hear her in concert, you will probably be swept away by her virtuosic Brazilian scat singing. But being Brazilian, she owns Brazilian music and is one of the upcoming keepers of the traditional flame as well as a creator of the next music in the Brazilian musical lineage. I think of her as an American woman since she lives in the U.S. and works here, and I’m grateful that she spends a good part of her musical life here. We need this music. Today’s songs isn’t by Clarice, it’s Tom Jobim, but I was so touched by her unpretentious performance with her father, guitarist Sergio Assad, I wanted to share it with you. Do yourself a favor and listen to the recordings of her music too!
