Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, piano
NYFOS’s Spanish Love Songs program, recorded in live performance at the Caramoor International Music Festival on July 9, 2004
Beginning in 1990, New York Festival of Song had the privilege of working with the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, one of the great vocal artists of the 20th century. She appeared fourteen times with NYFOS, in nine different programs. Spanish Love Songs premiered at Greenwich House Music School in November of 1991. The concert featured works from and about Spain in four languages, including songs by Granados, Ravel, Turina, Wolf and Schumann, among others. The program was revived three times and became a favorite of Ms. Lieberson's and of NYFOS's directors, Steven Blier and Michael Barrett.
The October 2007 release of Spanish Love Songs on Bridge Records, recorded live at Caramoor, captures this intriguing and lovely program for posterity; it was the last time Blier and Barrett would appear onstage with their beloved friend Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. Joseph Kaiser, the brilliant young Canadian tenor whose Metropolitan Opera debut coincided with the Spanish Love Songs release this fall, joined the cast for this remarkable performance, proving a virile and impressively nuanced musical partner to Ms. Lieberson. This disk is a souvenir of the magnificent Ms. Lieberson. Lovers of vocal music, and aficionados of the vital and imaginative programming that is the NYFOS trademark, will not want to be without this beautiful recording.
