All songs from this week’s “Song of the Day” come from women of color performing at COLORSXSTUDIOS. COLORSXSTUDIOS is a unique aesthetic music platform showcasing exceptional talent from around the globe. COLORS focuses on the most distinctive new artists and original sounds in an increasingly fragmented and saturated scene. All COLORS shows seek to provide clear, minimalistic stage that shines a spotlight on the artists, giving them the opportunity to present their music without distraction.

How do we speak about “Tan Kalakatan”? This was the first song that we both stopped what we were doing to just take in the sound world of this piece by Cape Verdean artist Mayra Andrade. Unless you speak Cape Verdean Creole, you likely approached this video the same way we did, in awe of the gorgeous language, and Mayra Andrade’s incredible ability to tell a story, and captivate you with her music alone.

The lyrics are as follows:

Tan Kalakatan (Empty)
You up and left
You went to Kaká’s
You treated me with disdain
And diminished me
When I got home
I knocked and knocked and knocked
But there was nothing in the house
Just tea and incense
A portrait and the cat / my guitar
And an empty pan
Come, but come and don’t go
I’ll fix what I did wrong and make it beautiful
Just like it was before, everything will be alright

The song grows and grows as it continues on and is truly unlike anything we had heard before, which made it a prime candidate for this weeks playlist, and one we hope you will enjoy just as much as we did.
