Matt Boehler, bass
In the 2007-08 season, Mr. Boehler will perform Leporello in Don Giovanni with Opera Lyra Ottawa and Chicago Opera Theater. He makes his debut with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, as well as his debut with the New York Festival of Song, participating in the world premieres of two new operas by William Bolcom and John Musto. He will also sing the Mozart Requiem at Avery Fisher Hall with the National Chorale.
Mr.
Boehler garnered praise in the title role of Sweeney Todd during
his 2005 residency with the Wolf Trap Opera Company. Other operatic
highlights include Leporello in the multimedia opera project Don
Juan in Prague (Prague Estates Theatre, Brooklyn Academy of Music),
the Abbot in Britten’s Curlew River (Japan Society),
Frere Laurent in Roméo et Juliette, and Pluto in Telemann’s
Orpheus with the Wolf Trap Opera Company, Basilio in Il
barbiere di Siviglia with Washington East Opera and the Old Hebrew
in Samson et Dalila with Hawaii Opera Theater. At the Juilliard
Opera Center, he was seen as Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s
Dream and Kecal in The Bartered Bride. During his tenure
as a resident artist with The Minnesota Opera he appeared as Sarastro
in Die Zauberflöte, Njegus in The Merry Widow,
Colline in La bohème, and the Friar in Don Carlo.
On concert platform he has been heard at Carnegie Hall with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in Bach's Magnificat and with the Oratorio Society of New York in Charpentier’s Te Deum among many other performances. He was the soloist in the Mozart Requiem with the New York Symphonic Ensemble, the Colonial Symphony and with the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola.
Mr. Boehler was a prizewinner in the 2004 Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition and in the 2004 National Opera Association's vocal competition. He was a winner in the Midwest Region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. He is also a three-time first prizewinner of the Schubert Club vocal competition and a recipient of the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation.
