Bert Kalmar & Harry Ruby: These Are the Laws Of My Administration

Written by Naomi Louisa O'Connell

mezzo-soprano

In category: Song of the Day

If you haven’t yet seen the Marx Brothers film Duck Soup, do yourself a favor and watch it—it’s irreverent, hysterical and (these days) educational.  The lyrics pack a particular punch right now: “If you think this country’s bad off now, just wait ’til I get through with it”… Ouch. Take a listen.

Performed by Groucho Marx and Margaret Dumont

Hailed by The New York Times as “radiant,” Irish mezzo-soprano Naomi Louisa O’Connell deftly balances her love of opera with that of art song, musical theater and popular song with repertoire ranging from Schumann, Strauss and Ravel to Bernstein, Gershwin and Randy Newman.
