I thought I’d leave you on a fun note. I found this next song while I was putting together a recital.
My sister Katie is actually the best sister you could ask for and I swear I’m not biased! She let me move in with her and took care of me when she was 25 and I was 16 after I got into Juilliard pre-college. She and her now husband were my surrogate parents for 2 years and we had the most wonderful time. Back when we were growing up in Tulsa, Katie was the popular, extremely athletic, beautiful, charming girl who everyone adored. I always looked up to her and wanted to be more like her but I was so shy and just couldn’t quite come out of my shell. That is until I found out I had a voice, moved to New York and got to live with Katie. Seth, my brother-in-law, always says that Katie had him from the first moment they met with her wit and beauty but when he saw her moves on the dance floor he was in it for the long-haul! Haha! So when I found this song I died it was so perfect!
Written by Armand J Piron published in 1922 (a little earlier than the era I was going to stick to) this jazz dance number is “I wish I could shimmy like my sister Kate” or just “Sister Kate”. This recording is from the movie Wabash Avenue sung by Betty Grable. Betty Grable is one of my favorite singer/dancer/actors not only because she’s definitely a triple threat but we also share the same birthday! Watch some of her movies. You won’t disappointed! I suggest How to Marry a Millionaire or Springtime in the Rockies! Enjoy!!
